How this is measured

The rate is the duty the Census Bureau calculates on goods from Thailand entered for consumption in the US, divided by the value of those goods. It is an average across everything, including the goods that enter duty-free. That makes it lower than a headline rate announced for a country, which applies only to the goods it names, and it moves when the mix of goods changes as well as when rates do.

It is not the same measure as the daily US tariff rate, which divides the customs duties deposited at the Treasury by the value of imports. Duty is deposited after goods arrive, so the two move together but not on the same day, and only the Census records can be split by country and product.

The value here is imports for consumption: $128.9bn from Thailand over the 12 months. Census's general imports, the figure on the economy page, were $129.6bn. General imports count goods when they arrive, including goods held in bonded warehouses and free-trade zones; imports for consumption count them when they enter the US market, which is when duty is owed.

Check: general imports from Thailand in August 2026 were $11.8bn in the Census data used here and $11.8bn in the same Census series on FRED (IMP5490): they match.

Census revises earlier months when it publishes revisions, and these pages always show the figures as currently published, rebuilt daily.
