Brent crude in rupees
What does a barrel of oil cost India, once the rupee is counted in?
Very high 99.6th percentile of the last five years
A high reading means oil is expensive for India in the currency India pays with. Expensive crude and a weak rupee compound each other, so this can sit at a record while the dollar price does not.

Reading the bands
Each band is a percentile rank against this series' own trailing five years, computed using only data available at the time. A reading of 99.6 means the value has been lower than this on 99.6% of days in that window. The bands describe position, not direction — see above for what a high reading means here.
| Band | Percentile | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Very high | 80–100 | Higher than it has been on four days in five over the past five years. |
| High | 60–80 | Above its own recent range, though not at an extreme. |
| Typical | 40–60 | Around the middle of its own five-year range. |
| Low | 20–40 | Below its own recent range. |
| Very low | 0–20 | Lower than it has been on four days in five over the past five years. |

Why price oil in rupees
India imports most of the crude it refines, and pays for it in dollars. What reaches the import bill, the trade deficit and eventually the pump is the dollar price times the exchange rate. The Brent price and the rupee each tell half of that story. This page multiplies them, day by day, so the two halves cannot be read separately and mistaken for the whole.
The calculation is plain: the EIA’s daily Europe Brent spot price, in dollars a barrel, times the Federal Reserve’s rupees-per-dollar rate on the same day (or the latest rate within five days). The freshest rupee rate comes from the European Central Bank, one day behind.
How to read it
- It is nominal. No adjustment is made for Indian inflation, so a record here is a record in rupees of the day. Over many years, nominal records are easier to set than real ones.
- It is a benchmark, not India’s purchase price. Indian refiners buy at differentials to Brent and on term contracts. The series tracks the cost direction, not any one cargo.
- It lags. Brent publishes through FRED about a week behind, and the date of the latest observation is stated at the top of the page.
What this page is not
It is not the retail price of petrol or diesel. Retail prices include central and state taxes and are set by the oil marketing companies.
